API 682 Seal Plans

API 682 Seal Plans

An API 682 seal plan determines the auxiliary systems that must be connected to a seal chamber or a mechanical seal; some sealing configurations only work in combination with a certain plan. These seal plans are generally used in pumps or compressors located in hazardous areas, explosive areas, corrosive or toxic environments such as chemical plants and Oil & Gas industries.

RIVI Technical Group designs and manufactures seal plans under API 682 and ISO 21049 regulations, which specify the different parameters to be considered such as layout, configuration, typology, etc.

Some typologies and examples of API 682 seal plans that have been successfully supplied by RIVI Technical Group are:

Plan 54

An external pressure system provides circulation. The pressure in the tank is higher than the pressure in the process to be sealed. It is used for applications where the products have high pressures and are harmful or dangerous.

Plan 32

The fluid is pumped into the seal chamber from an external medium. The sealing fluid must be chosen carefully to avoid possible mists and avoid contamination of the pumped fluid. It is used when the product to be pumped does not have good lubricating properties, contains suspended solids and/or is dangerous.

Plan 53 A

A pressurized external tank supplies clean barrier fluid into the seal chamber. The circulation is carried out through an inner ring. The tank pressure is higher than the pressure of the process to be sealed. It is used for “hot” applications or where products have low pressure and are harmful or dangerous.

Plan 53B

The outer pipe supplies fluid to the outer seal in a double seal arrangement. A pressurized diaphragm accumulator supplies pressure to the circulation system. The flow is maintained by an internal pumping ring. The heat is removed using an air-oil or water-oil exchanger. It is used in applications where the products have high pressures and are harmful or dangerous.
