BIO-H2: Biotechnology applied to biological hydrogen production (Phase I)

BIO-H2: Biotechnology applied to the biological production of hydrogen (Phase 1)

The project (Phase I)

BIO-H2 project proposes a biological green H2 generation system which uses organic matter from wastewater as a substrate. This system is intended as an economical and modular solution that allows the recovery of wastewater in industry, especially if it contains a high concentration of sugars in its effluents, as is the case of the agri-food industry.

To achieve this,  three lines of work are proposed: the choice of improved bacterial cultures, the optimization of the hydrogen production process, and its storage and control.

BIO-H2 will sensorize all the critical parameters of the system providing real-time monitoring of the entire process. A second part after this project will focus on the energy use of hydrogen produced for self-consumption.

The goal of BIO-H2 is the biological production of green hydrogen using wastewater as raw material. This green hydrogen, used for energy self-consumption in an industry, will lower the company's energy costs and reduce its carbon footprint. In addition, the biological process will increase the biodegradability of the water, thus reducing water treatment costs.

On the other hand, BIO-H2 will produce waste recovery and a complete circular economy with almost zero energy generation cost if we consider the reduction in wastewater purification costs.

This whole system is based on the idea that it must be operated autonomously and with minimum maintenance. For this reason, the entire hydrogen generation, water treatment and gas storage system will be digitized and sensorized in real time with technology 4.0 so that they work harmoniously. All this information will be integrated into a control platform that will send automatic alerts when any of the variables goes out of the established range.

Partners

This project is possible thanks to the collaboration between INGEOBRAS , DAB Technology and RIVI Technical Group. It is a project coordinated by ZINNAE, the Aragonese cluster for the efficient and sustainable use of water.

Our goal is to combine knowledge in the choice of improved bacterial cultures, the optimization of the hydrogen production process and its storage and control.

This synergy of technology and knowledge will result in the creation of a biological green H2 generation system which uses organic matter from wastewater as a substrate.

Results

It is expected to define an improved metabolic pathway, capable of increasing Hproduction and carry out the necessary pilot tests to optimize the process through the adjustment of the main influence variables. Furthermore, the design of the gas purification and storage system will be obtained. All this, under the principles of industry 4.0.

Funding

This project has received aid in the form of a grant regulated by the support programme for Innovative Business Groups (AEI in Spanish) of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism. Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan – Funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU.
